The M&A Gardens
A Tropical Sanctuary
The Mermaid & The Alligator Gardens will take your breath away. Giant philodendron wrap tall palms; hibiscus, Sanchezia, and Ixora flaunt their vibrancy while plumeria, jasmine, and Ylang Ylang intoxicate. Picturesque grottos, patios, and orchid lined walkways invite you to explore and enjoy the intimate sitting areas tucked within. Water features trickling and gurgling amidst the foliage, along with the chatter of lovebirds and parakeets, are all part of an ambiance designed to calm and enchant.
Previous owner, Dean Carlson, is the genius behind the design and creation of The Mermaid & The Alligator gardens. Over the course of 17 years, with a background in Landscape Design and Horticulture, Dean worked tirelessly to create a peaceful tropical space where guests could retreat and unwind. A large collection of palms, tropical and native plants, and flowering trees grow throughout the property. The gardens are ever changing throughout the year; orchids bloom in the winter & spring, the Royal Poinciana June thru July, and the fragrant plumeria in summer and fall. Our year round semi-tropical climate and summer rains promote continual blooming cycles so the garden is brilliant with color all year long.
Frequented year round by many birds, both native and migrating, our gardens have numerous visitors. In the fall, various birds migrating south to Cuba and Central America use our gardens as a stop-over point before the long flight over the Gulf Stream, and then again in the spring on their way back up north. It is a special treat to walk out to our gardens that are teaming with yellow finch, or to see the occasional Snowy Egret hunting in our fountain. Having studied the bird life in the Keys, John Audubon painted the native White Crown Pigeon. Now an endangered species, we are lucky enough to have a White Crown Pigeon visit us every year to eat the bright red berries from one of our palms.
The gardens were Dean’s passion. His intention was always to create intimate areas throughout the grounds where guests could "escape from it all" in a place of beauty and tranquility. A full breakfast is served poolside amidst the lush foliage each morning and a complimentary glass of wine in the evenings. Guests can take advantage of the soft music in the gardens and slow dance under the tropical canopy or beneath the chandelier hanging from our giant Royal Poinciana tree. Let the gardens speak to you.
